Prereading Tips

Prereading checklist

Use the questioning strategy below to teach students how to think about a selection before reading it. The questions refer to reading "passages," but they can be used universally and work well with science and social studies text.

  1. How is this passage organized?
  2. What do the title and subtitles tell you about the passage?
  3. Write the key words you see in the passage and tell what you think they mean.
  4. What type of graphic source does this passage have? What does it tell you?
  5. What seems to be the purpose of the story or passage?
  6. Predict what you expect to learn from the passage. Use your answers to the above questions to support your prediction.
  7. What do you already know about this topic?
  8. If you read the questions, what information did they provide about the topic?
  9. Now that you are ready to read the passage, look back over everything you learned from previewing the selection.
