Elaboration

Use the activity below to introduce imagery, language that appeals to the five senses. Explain how descriptions come to life when a writer's senses do the "talking." Regularly discuss and share examples of imagery (children's books are excellent resources). Encourage students to incorporate their "senses" in their writing.

can your nose do the talking?

Using Imagery to Elaborate

Try to get the reader to imagine the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that you describe in your writing, especially if you are telling a story. If you write about a blanket, let the reader know how it feels. Is it soft and fuzzy? Words that appeal to the five senses add details to your writing. Your readers want to feel like they can see your ideas. They want to know all the details that make your topic interesting.

Look at the examples in the boxes below. They will help you understand how to use the five senses in your own writing.
